Arlington, Virginia is a close suburb to Washington, D.C. It is located directly across the Potomac River from the nations capital. It takes its name from the National Cemetery located there, which in turn, takes its name from the historic estate on which it was established. Arlington House, also known as the Custis-Lee mansion, was built overlooking Washington, D.C. by the step-grandson of President George Washington. At his death, his daughter, who was married to Robert E. Lee, inherited the property. At the outbreak of the Civil War, with General Robert E. Lee heading the Army of the Confederacy, the family abandoned the Arlington estate. During the war, the estate was occupied by the Union Army which buried some of its war dead there and led to its designation as a national cemetery. The cemetery holds the remains of U.S. military and war dead as well as two Presidents. One of the most visited sites in the cemetery is the graveside of President John F. Kennedy, illuminated by the eternal flame. His widow, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, is buried alongside. His brothers, Senators Robert and Ted Kennedy, are interred nearby. Another popular site within the cemetery is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This monument, guarded around the clock every day of the year, holds the remains of unidentified soldiers from World Wars I and II, and the Korean War. A favorite of tourists is watching the ceremony of the changing of the guard at the tomb. But, Arlington is much more than a cemetery. It is a densely populated suburb of Washington. It boasts the most highly educated population in the country.
